Gerard Pique injury puts Barcelona defense deeper into despair ahead of Champions League
FC Barcelona have confirmed that Defender Gerard Pique injured his knee in Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid. Pique's injury has worsened the club's player crisis in defence due to injury.
Pique, 33, will undergo further tests upon his return to Barcelona on Sunday to know the severity of the problem. Club sources did not want to speculate on how long he will be out, but various media reports in Catalonia suggested it can go for weeks, if not for months
Barcelona centre-back position is really lacking players. Indeed, the club did tried to sign Eric Garcia in the summer but they are now so weak financially that they could not meet Manchester City’ asking price for the 20 yr old centre back.
Barca started the season with just three orthodox centre-backs in the senior squad: Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet and Ronald Araujo.
The absence of Pique leaves Barca with just one fit central defender, Clement Lenglet for Tuesday's trip to Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League. Samuel Umtiti and Ronald Araujo are also currently struggling with fitness issues.
Barcelona's Right-back Sergi Roberto will also have a check-up on his hamstring injury picked up in the final stages of Saturday's game.
While Barca are struggling in the league, Atletico Madrid have made an amazing start to the season. They're unbeaten in eight games and, with 20 points, are joint top with Real Sociedad.
